BOP Releases Connected to Benton
The Federal Bureau of Prisons operates a national prison system separate from Benton County and Oregon Department of Corrections. No BOP institution was identified inside Benton County. A federal prosecution can still involve a Benton resident, and a sentenced person can serve time in another state. The BOP Inmate Locator is the public route for current federal inmates and people released from BOP after 1982.
A result with Location `RELEASED` and a past Release Date means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not show that every federal obligation ended. Federal supervised release may follow prison. State, local, or immigration custody may begin. A court order or detainer can change the destination. Verify the legal and physical status in the source that controls each stage.
The Benton County jail report answers a different question. A person leaving local custody under a federal handoff is not confirmed as released from BOP. Likewise, a BOP release does not describe an earlier Benton booking. Do not merge the two events merely because the same name appears.
Search Federal BOP Release Records
The locator accepts a federal register number or a name and demographic details. A register number is the most precise key. Name searches should account for spelling, middle names, and common-name collisions. Match age, race, and sex only as identity aids, never as the sole basis.
- Open the official BOP Inmate Locator.
- Search by register number when known, or enter the name and available demographic details.
- Compare the returned identity before opening or relying on a row.
- Read Release Date and Location together.
- Check the federal docket or request the federal record when the exact legal event or destination matters.
The official BOP search shown below is the correct national entry point.

The national interface confirms why a Benton County roster is not the source for federal prison release status.
Read Federal BOP Release Fields
A locator row can include name, register number, current age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. These fields have specific limits. The date can be past, future, or unknown. The location can describe release or movement rather than a community address.
| BOP value | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Past Release Date with `RELEASED` | No longer in BOP custody as reported by the locator. |
| Future Release Date | A projected date that can change. |
| `UNKNOWN` | The term or release date has not been determined. |
| `IN TRANSIT` | Movement or an unresolved transfer state, not proof of community release. |
| Institution location | Current BOP placement, not a Benton County jail location. |
`IN TRANSIT` can reflect movement involving the United States Marshals Service. Research cautions that it may persist even after a court release when notice has not reached BOP. Use the court docket for the order. Never convert that locator value into a claim that the person is free.
The BOP record guide shown below explains the released, unknown, projected, and transit distinctions.

Those meanings help prevent a transfer status from being reported as a community release.
Obtain Federal BOP Release Records
The public locator is useful for status, but a durable record can supply more detail. BOP's BP-A714 release form includes fields for inmate or register number, release date and method, institution, community versus detainer destination, transportation and arrival, supervision jurisdictions, and proposed residence. Availability and disclosure depend on the federal record process and applicable law.
For records before 1982, the public locator is not the route. BOP directs historical searches to the National Archives. Supply the person's name, birth date or approximate age, race, and approximate prison dates. A precise request is more likely to locate the correct file than a name alone.

Use federal records channels for official release documents.
A federal court docket provides the legal order, sentence, dismissal, or supervised-release terms. It may not provide the exact physical time BOP processed release. Pair the docket with the locator and requested custody record.
Federal BOP Release Document Fields
The BP-A714 field set is useful because it distinguishes the fact of release from the plan at release. In addition to the release date and method, it can identify the institution completing the event, whether the destination is the community or another custodian, anticipated transportation, the supervision jurisdiction, and a proposed residence. Those fields answer questions a simple locator row cannot.
A proposed residence is not proof of arrival. Transportation data may change, and a detainer destination means another agency may receive the person. Read the completed record with the federal judgment and any later supervision entry. If the person is expected in Benton County, verify the federal supervision path rather than assuming Oregon Community Corrections has authority.
Release method also matters. A sentence completion, court order, transfer, and detainer handoff describe different events. Request the exact dated form or equivalent record instead of asking generally whether someone is “out.” This keeps the reply tied to BOP custody and reduces confusion with an earlier USMS movement.
When a locator result changes, note the date of each check. A prior `IN TRANSIT` value and a later `RELEASED` value describe separate snapshots. Preserve both with the docket sequence instead of rewriting the earlier status. This is especially useful when a court order, marshal movement, and BOP update occur on different days.
Federal Release Versus Other Custody
BOP handles sentenced federal prison custody. The United States Marshals Service handles much federal pretrial detention and transport but offers no public prisoner locator. ICE operates civil immigration detention with its own locator. These agencies are not interchangeable.
| Situation | First source |
|---|---|
| Sentenced federal inmate | BOP Locator and BOP record. |
| Federal pretrial defendant | Federal court docket or PACER. |
| Current or recent ICE matter | ICE Online Detainee Locator and ERO. |
| State-prison term | Oregon Offender Search, not BOP. |
| Benton jail booking | BCSO custody and release reports. |
A BOP record marked released does not rule out supervised release or custody elsewhere. Search the next system only when facts support that path. Do not use absence from one database as proof about every other agency.
If a federal court orders release before BOP custody begins, the docket is the source. A missing BOP result is expected and does not weaken that court record.
Note: BOP Locator does not function as a mugshot archive, and USMS says it does not publicly release prisoner photographs or histories.
Bridge BOP and Benton Records
If the person had a separate Benton County booking, start with the BCSO 31-day release report. A valid county Release Date and Release Reason answers when that local custody episode ended. The current Benton roster answers whether BCSO still holds the person, including at a contract location. Neither source proves a federal prison release.
For county records older than the online window, use the Benton County written-request channel. Include booking, file, agency, and case details. For the federal stage, carry the federal register number and docket number into federal searches. Keeping identifiers tied to their system prevents one custody episode from being mistaken for another.
The Benton County release search covers the local record path. Use the BOP page and federal docket for the federal stage. A later return to Benton under supervision should be confirmed through the supervising federal office or court record, not through BCSO Parole & Probation unless Oregon supervision actually applies.
A detainer destination is especially important. The BOP release form distinguishes community release from a handoff to another custodian and can carry transportation, arrival, proposed residence, and supervision-jurisdiction data. A past locator date alone cannot disclose all of that. If the destination is material, ask for the release document and compare it with the court docket.
Supervised release begins under federal court authority. Conditions can continue after a person reaches Benton County, yet the BOP locator may simply show `RELEASED`. The federal judgment and later docket entries are the sources for that supervision term. Do not infer that a clean BOP location field means all federal court duties ended.
Records before 1982 require a different trail. The National Archives search benefits from approximate age, birth date, race, and prison dates because a modern register-number result may not exist. Keep that historical request separate from a modern Benton jail record or state corrections search.
No federal prison or verified federal detention facility was identified in Benton County. A Benton address, arrest, or family connection does not establish the location of federal confinement or release.
